Hot Topic – Isn’t Christianity a white religion?

May 28, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Ryan van der Avoort, who works on UKZN Howard Campus writes, “The more I delve into this topic, the more I think it is one of the most important questions we need to grapple with at the moment in our country in speaking about Jesus.” For many South Africans being a Christian and being white are one and the same thing, therefore when Christ is preached what is often heard – even implied – is that one must reject their culture, ethnicity, and the right to speak against decades of injustice in our country.

The idea that Christianity is a white or Western religion is a gospel issue, because it presents a hindrance to the gospel and trusting in Christ. This idea is usually accompanied with related statements, such as: ‘Christianity is the religion of the oppressor,’ and ‘Missionaries gave us the Bible but took our land.’ These cannot be dismissed as ignorant or reductionistic; we must recognise the genuine hurt, suspicion, and complexity of our history.
Most importantly, as Ryan writes, “We must uncouple the unholy link between whiteness and Christianity to reach everyone with the real Jesus and his message.”
