Let’s Read the Bible Together

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matt. 4:4)

As many stockpile food for the days to come, we as believers have both an opportunity and responsibility to ensure that we are also prepared to feed ourselves and our families God’s life-giving Word. This is not a new responsibility, but one made all the more apparent as our corporate teaching opportunities are limited for a season. We want to equip you with many different resources to help you remain in God’s Word at this time. It’s our ongoing prayer that the Word of God may deliver comfort, hope and strength to you through the suggested resources below.

Bible Apps

YouVersion

This is the most downloaded Bible app in the world. Many of you will already be aware of it. It has hundreds of Bible reading plans of varying lengths. Note: Exercise caution in choosing a plan. We would recommend the following plans to check out: M’Cheyne One Year Reading Plan, Family Worship: A 5-Day Guide, Renew: Romans 8, Praying with Paul, Acts: To The Ends Of The Earth, Daniel: Far From Home, Colossians: Alive in Christ, 1 Peter: Following Jesus.

Read Scripture

This is an excellent companion to reading the Bible. Some of its most useful features include a Bible timeline that tracks where you’ve been and where you’re going, as well as video content explaining key theological concepts along the way.

PrayerMate

This is a free app designed to help you with your personal prayer life. It brings all your prayer points together in one place, allows you to create folders to categorize them, and also lets you set reminders. It allows you to join organizations that do great work for the gospel and partner with them in prayer.  We have listed Christ Church Umhlanga as one of those organizations to keep you updated on how we can pray as a church family. Here are other suggested organisations and programmes to add to your app: Open Doors, The Bible Talks (UKZN), 5 Things to Pray for the People You Love, The Wonder of Easter (An Easter Journey for the Whole Family).

Podcasts

Solid Joys Daily Devotional

These range from 2-4 minutes long and are written and read by John Piper.

ESV: Through The Bible In A Year

This is a reading plan with select chapters guiding you through the year. All you have to do is click play and listen.

Kindle or PDF

The Final Days of Jesus

Crossway Publishing has made this resource freely available to download in Kindle or PDF format. It’s a wonderful companion to Bible reading as we lead up to Easter. “Combining a chronological arrangement of the Gospel accounts with insightful commentary, charts, and maps, this book will help you better understand what actually happened all those years ago—and why it matters today.”

Read Slow Collection

A number of authors have contributed entries from their books and compiled them into what they are calling the Read Slow Collection. They are designed to “help us slow down and understand ourselves and our God in the midst of scary and uncertain times.” It’s freely available in PDF format.

The Devil would love nothing more than for us to neglect God’s Word at a time like this. Let’s prove him wrong! Join us in reading the Bible together.
